bobbin thread color...

Have you ever used a different color in the bobbin than what's on the top for your quilting? I finished the quilt top for my sister and I'm getting ready to quilt it soon. My problem is that my backing fabric is an army green and pink color (see above). I want to quilt the quilt with white thread but I'm afraid it will stand out so much more than I'd like it to on the back. So I'm contemplating using a green or pink or even invisible thread in the bobbin. Have you ever done this? Does it work out ok?
Anyone ever use invisible thread for quilting? The stuff I found is invisible nylon thread. (quoted from Connecting Threads) "There's no need to change the bobbin tension with this fine, yet strong, translucent thread! Gives machine quilting a supple, antique look. Originally produced for embellishment uses.

Do I dare use anything but 100% cotton thread when machine quilting??

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated! I just don't know if I want to use white on the back.

To Do List

  1. Start and finish an "Avalon" quilt from the Material Obsession book for my sister's birthday (which is Aug. 15th! I better get on this FAST!)
  2. Stay up to date and on schedule with Freckled Whimsy's Charm Pack quilt along. (so far so good! Got my 75 HST completed!)
  3. Finish blocks 6-12 of Modify Tradition's Round 2 quilt along. (which was over and done with MONTHS ago, but I started it, so I want to finish it!)
  4. Baste and quilt Modify Tradition's first quilt along quilt.(oh, and I'm not hand quilting it. I changed my mind AGAIN and I'm just going to machine quilt it)
  5. Finish piecing and then quilting my "Butterfly Fling" quilt for my 6 year old that I started a year ago!
I better get busy! I really needed to get this in a list form so I can see it in front of my face so I can relax a little and take one thing at a time. I can do this!

So Frustrated!!

5 yards of Anna Maria Horner's Folksy Flannel and it's still not enough for the backing of my Modify Tradition quilt! This quilt is seriously becoming my nemesis! It's so big. It's about 85"x87". I'm so done with piecing the top that I don't even want to mess with the back now! So I think I'm just going to get a flat sheet and use that. It's just getting to the point where I'm dreading this quilt and I don't want to feel that way about this quilt because I really do love it so much.

My piecing of the top is so ridiculous and uneven that I'm hoping that when I go to quilt it it hides it. I'm sure the finished product will be far from squared up, but at this point, I don't care. It's for me and I love it, so it will be ok. I noticed today while looking at the top that there is a huge white space near the bottom with nothing there. Now I'm thinking maybe I'll applique something in that spot. What?...I have no clue, but I feel like I have to put something there. Maybe I'll take some of flannel and put my initials or "JEN" in that space.

Now I need to find a flat sheet that will work with the top. I'd like to not have to use a solid color. Anny suggestions as to where to look?

And as far as my health....I CAN DRIVE AGAIN!! I had an EEG done yesterday and the neurologist found nothing abnormal. So it must have just been a freak thing that he said can come on for numerous reasons (like dehydration, which I was when I arrived at the hospital) So being that nothing like this has every happened to me before he seemed to think this was a one time deal. So I'm happy and feeling like my old self again! Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes, I do appreciate them!

winner!

#6 A from Scissors and Thread won the giveaway! I've sent you an email requesting your info. Thanks to all for entering and I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the summer!

On a side note, I've had a little medical emergency the other day and spent Wednesday in the ER all day. I basically fainted and had a seizure. Chipped several teeth in the process. They don't seem to know what caused it. I had a CT scan done and it came back fine. Bad part is that they have told me no driving until cleared by my doctor. I saw him yesterday and he won't clear me until I see a neurologist. So now I'm playing the waiting game for referrals and appointments. My husband is deployed and won't be home until the beginning of August. I have 2 kids 6 & 2 yrs old, and I just moved here a month ago. So this has been rather difficult for me. I'm having to ask for help from other wives on base that are pretty much strangers. Asking for help is one of those things I'm just not good at. My step-mom drove 7 hours to be here for me the day it happened, since she lives the closest. So I do have her here with me now, but she's leaving on Sunday. So I may be a little absent from blogland for a bit.

Sam, I am.

I've had this quilt done since before the move. I just had the label to do and then wash and dry it. So I just finished it up last night and now it's ready to be sent to Baby Sam, another baby born to a Navy family.

The floral/animal print is "Hot Flash" by Luella Doss and Andrea Schuster for Free Spirit Fabrics that I picked up from a lqs in Reno. The solid colors are from a Robert Kaufman Solids jelly roll, and the beige is an IKEA beige Dvala sheet. It measures 39"x46".

Hope you all have a great weekend and those that are living in the USA, enjoy your Independence Day! I think I'll be heading to the beach for the day. I'll be home alone this year w/ the kiddos while my hubby is aboard the USS Ronald Reagan.  He's due home early August, so a little over a month to go!
